Are you wanting to host a family reunion, birthday party or other special events in our parks?
Johnson County Park and Independence Park offer a combined eight outdoor shelters that have flexible party space for food and fun, picnic tables, electrical service (available at Johnson County Park) and parking. Your guests also can enjoy playground areas, hiking paths and the beautiful surroundings of our parks.
Please review rental policies on the agreement before your rental. There are items that are not allowed and it is the renter’s responsibility to be fully aware of that prior to payment. No refunds can be issued after payment. To rent a shelter, please call the Johnson County Park Office.
To use any Johnson County Parks and Recreation facility for a wedding, you must fill out a Wedding Contract.
All 2024 rentals will be base rate plus tax.

Located on the corner of Schoolhouse and Heartnut, this is the second small shelter you come to when traveling south on Schoolhouse. It generally has four picnic tables, with a capacity of 30 people. There is a large parking lot across the street, as well as to the rear of the Heartnut area, off Gatling. Please don’t block the roads or park in the grass.
Located on the southwest corner of Picnic and Schoolhouse. It is the first shelter on the left in the Heartnut area that you pass if you are traveling south on Schoolhouse. It generally has four picnic tables, with a capacity of about 30 people. There is a large parking lot across the street, as well as to the rear of the Heartnut area, off Gatling. Please don’t block the roads or park in the grass.
This is the large shelter on the corner of Picnic and Cabin. It has two sides, with a stone counter on each side and a fireplace built into the east side of the shelter. Fires are welcome to be built here, but wood may NOT be scavenged from the park property. The shelter generally has10 picnic tables, with a capacity of about 60 people. There is no parking adjacent to the Fireside Shelter, but there is a large parking lot across the street, as well as to the rear of the Heartnut area, off Gatling. Please don’t block the roads or park in the grass.
The Heartnut is the large shelter on the hill, to the east of the other shelters. It is off Heartnut Lane, to the west of Gatling Street. This shelter has generally about 14 tables, with a capacity of about 120. There is ample parking in the lot off Gatling, just to the east of the Heartnut Shelter, with only one or two sites adjacent to the shelter. Parking on the grass is not permitted.
Located on the southwest corner of Schoolhouse and North. It is the big shelter you pass on your right, with the campground behind it, right before you turn onto North Street, if you are traveling south on Schoolhouse road. Generally has 12 picnic tables, with a capacity of about 80 people. There is limited parking right in front of the shelter. You can also park at the dump station lot north of the shelter, as long as you don’t block the dump station.
The Case Shelter is on your right as you come up the hill in Independence Park. The Case generally has four to six picnic tables, with a capacity of about 40. There are a couple sites next to the Case for parking, the rest are up the hill in the main lot. Parking in the grass is not permitted.
The REMC Shelter is located to the right of the playground if you are facing the playground. There are generally six picnic tables in the shelter and it has a capacity of about 45. There is parking located near the REMC Shelter. Parking in the grass is not permitted.
The Bargersville Utility Shelter is located behind and to the left of the playground. There are generally six picnic tables in the shelter and it has a capacity of about 45. There is no parking immediately next to the Bargersville Utility Shelter, but the parking lot is very, very close. There is a walkway from the parking lot to the shelter. Parking in the grass is not permitted.
